Electrical safety in suburban Africa
By Benoit Dome / Published on Mon, 2009-05-04 06:41The peri-urban electrification programme in Sub Sahara Africa will improve the lives of some 15 million households and over 110 million people. It will create energy efficiencies calculated of over 7% of the region’s current electricity consumption, which is the equivalent of over ~7 million Tonnes of CO2 emissions. Per household the energy efficiencies account for some ~40% of the current consumption, including the savings generated by the upstream improvements.
This programme will upgrade the supply distribution infrastructure by extending and improving the efficiency of the final transformation and distribution to home users as well as renovate the home installations by installing safety and energy efficiency improvements both to the installation and the appliances most commonly in use.
These actions lead to the following benefits to users:
- Improved electrical safety, leading to reduced incidents of electrical shock and electrical fires
- Improved reliability of supply, improving food quality and reliability of operations for small businesses relying on electricity
- Improved energy efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions
This film is shot in Dakar where the programme is scheduled to launch. It presents a vivid picture of the social and personal issues relating to lack of conforming access to electricity in the ever growing Sub Saharan African peri-urban zones.
